At 0 degrees yesterday, I watched this Belted Kingfisher dive into the frigid Yellowstone and grab a fish.

Coulee

Just explored one of the coolest spots in Cut Bank, MT, where a friend of mine grew up. The kids stumbled upon a giant mound of dirt and rock and began finding lots of fossils of sea life, which turned into an all day event.

I woke up to an unusual stillness on the Missouri River in Great Falls, MT...

Merlin

I saw my first Merlin on this perfect fall day, perched on a post. Also known as the pigeon hawk, this small falcon captures most of its prey in flight.

Fall Bear

Saw this black bear today in the creek close to our backyard. Meanwhile, Porter's soccer game was happening right across the road in Sacajawea Park...cool sighting today!

Garter Snake vs. Fish

We watched a garter snake grab a fish out of the water and drag it up onto the bank and into the brush to eat it. So cool watching the process!

Innate Skill

Witnessed a beautiful juvenile bald eagle attempt to catch a fish on the Yellowstone the other day, circling around a few times before it gave up and perched in a nearby tree.

Buried Treasure

This picture was taken in March of this year. Snow still hung onto the banks of the Yellowstone River, but what was underneath still hung on like magic to these boys, always searching...

Silhouette

Revisiting old photos and realized I'd never posted this favorite of an osprey in the nest in Paradise Valley.

The Truffula Tree

I happened upon this Dr. Seuss looking sprout growing out of a rock slide on the trail up to Passage Falls a few days ago. It beckoned to be photographed.

At Home on the River

Pirate's cove is our daily playground this summer, building and creating the perfect spot to spend our summer days.

Bend

I was amused by this raven hopping up and down atop this old barn on the way to Martinsdale, MT, recently. I could've sat there for hours...

Some Luck

My son found a four-leaf clover today in our backyard. It has been estimated that there are approximately 10,000 three-leaf clovers for every four-leaf clover. I'm thinkin' luck was on his side today.

On Lookout

I finally saw a Golden Eagle chick in the nest that is up on the cliff along Convict Grade road yesterday. I only saw one, and didn't see any parents around. I'm thinking that this chick is around 8 weeks old, maybe more. I'll be checking the nest as regularly as I can. It would be cool to see this bird fledge from here, which could be around 10-13 weeks old...!

Venue of Vultures

I can't say I've ever seen three turkey vultures in one spot since I've lived in Montana. But today driving up Mill Creek, this committee was enjoying a rotting roadside carcass.

Beautiful landscape with avocets, curlew, killdeer and terns migrating in spring at Martinsdale Resevoir recently.
